The Horse's Wish List
(reprinted with permission from Margrit Coates)
[
To be weaned gently and
gradually from my mother over at least a 2 week period, and not
before 6 months of age, ideally later.
[
When I am old enough to work or be ridden, a trainer to help me
who has patience, kindness, integrity and plenty of horse knowledge;
someone who teaches me with loving empathy.
[
To be with humans who understand
that I can hurt in the same places that they can- in my heart, in my
mind, and everywhere in my body.
[
Many hours of free time outside in
a paddock everyday of my life.
[
Other horses and ponies to
socialise and play with.
[
Tack and saddle that is properly
fitted and checked every six months.
[
A qualified dentist to check my
teeth every year.
[
A farrier who understands how my
feet and legs work.
[
A rider who works with me within my
capabilities and does not expect me to be perfect or function like a
machine.
[
Not to be exploited and to be able
to make some choices in my life.
[
To be able to express my
personality and individuality.
[
Enough to drink and eat, and the
right sort of food, herbs and forage.
[
To be checked over at least once a
day.
[
Humans in my life who talk to me
and understand what I say back to them.
[
Healing hands to touch me.
[
To be loved and share my love.
[
Peace.
