The Soft Approach to Schooling
Courses with Craig Wiggins Craig has been schooling problem dressage horses successfully in Mid Canterbury but finds he has a better result if he works with both the rider and the horse. He has found that 'stuck' dressage horses respond very well to basic ground work learning to collect and move laterally with control of speed and balance without the need for side reins and other toys or gimmicks. Basic collection from behind being developed and built into a more rounded and soft horse ready to take cues without rushing and staying in control of their mind body. Using techniques learned while training in Canada, Australia and by using techniques that are working here in Canterbury, Craig's goal is to help the horse and rider come together without the "tug of war" that seems to develop, as time in the saddle becomes a bigger and bigger argument. He asks horses to bend, shoulders to search for ground and for the horse to swing through from behind before teaching the rider to collect their horse into a frame that will stay light, balanced and a pleasure to ride.
He has found that too many dressage horses are
ridden with too much hand which blocks the natural flow of the body
creating stiffness. By doing simple ground work some long reining
and working on body control and speed of horse and rider Craig is
sure you will feel a more relaxed ride at the end of a lesson.
Craig Wiggins has been starting horses for 22
years, and has experience in Canada, Australia and NZ
